This week I managed to get on with a massive new collection of notebooks. I’ve had a huge stash of recycled paper building up for the past year and now’s the time to use it!
The books are all made with 22 pages of folded a4 paper, mostly old documents and photocopies that would have otherwise ended up in the recycling bin (i haven’t thrown away a blank sheet of paper in literally YEARS).
I use waxed linen thread which is a really strong thread that can withstand a lot of pulling and knotting, I can actually split the thread into thinner strands and it still works just as well.
There are loads of really beautiful and intricate ways to bind, (just look at all the amazing work on Pinterest) but as I always cover the thread with double sided tape, I just use a really simple method which is similar to Japanese Stab binding.
I’ve also been working on some new cushion cover designs this week, and had another go with my sewing machines free-hand foot. I find it so difficult, but I thought I could at least manage to colour in the hedges in my latest map of Victorian era London.
Deadline is tomorrow, and im MILES from finishing, heres what i have so far….
For my final piece Im making a journal/guidebook for visitors to London, Im using rescued and recycled papers for the pages and embroidery and collage for my guide pages. Rather than information about the more obvious landmarks and tourist spots ive used places/things i like visiting, places I would recommend to others. The blank pages in the book are for the owner to write/draw on with their own favourite sights.
So far i have 4 pages finished… below is 3 of them (dont have any good pictures of the 4th yet!)
^ this is bits of the old london A-Z i got hold of, tis beautiful 🙂 (maybe not surrounded by masking tape…)
^ here is one of my finished pages, a map to the Dolls house on the hill in Harrow, complete with nearest tube station.
^^^Southbank page. Im not sure about the layout but im so pleased with the map. it took a WHOLE SODDING DAY.
^^ these are the Elfin oak page, again there are bits i like and bits i dont, but i think everyone should genuinely look at the map and go and see it in Kensington Gardens………… cos its pretty like!
Oh also, just so you know after this book is finished (and marked which will take a while…) Ill be selling it on Etsy, along with another I made for this project and a few other bits from this term, like the black tote from the Deep Space project. (see the deep space blog post)
For our new project ‘print is dead’ im making books to sell on Etsy. easy!
My theme (at the moment) is maps and im just trying out a few different things
^^^this is the first one im really happy with, im thinking of turning it into a guidebook for london with space for the owner to write in and stick in their own bits and pieces…
^^this ones in progress, its taking AGES
^^this is my way of flattening paper in my room….lol
^^ some sketchbook ideas….
